Professor Tony Weiss, PhD AM FAA FTSE FAHMS FRSN FRACI FRSC FRSB FAIMBE FNAI FBSE FTERM is the McCaughey Chair in Biochemistry, National Health and Medical Research Council Leadership Fellow, and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology, in the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. He is the leader in detailed molecular studies on the key human elastic protein, and its assembly to make clinically relevant three-dimensional elastin protein biomaterials that reduce tissue damage and accelerate repair.
His collection of awards encompasses the Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation (Australia’s top innovation medal), Eureka Prize for Innovation in Medical Research (the nation’s major science prizes), NSW Premier’s Prize for Science and Engineering Leadership in Innovation (the state’s leading prizes), Clunies Ross Award (Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering) and Ian Wark Medal (Australian Academy of Science). He is a rare Fellow of all 3 Australian major learned science and technology academies. He is a further 8 x Fellow including the Royal Society of Chemistry UK, National Academy of Inventors USA, and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is on 14 Editorial Boards, and an inventor on 174 granted international patents in 23 patent families. He founded a clinical stage company that was sold in one of Australia’s largest healthcare transactions, is Chair of the Fellows of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, and was President of the Matrix Biology Society of Australia and New Zealand, and President of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society.
