Prof. Medhat Askar, MD, PhD, MSHPE, FRCPath, F(ACHI), D(ABMLI), HCLD(ABB) is a laboratory medicine physician scientist specialized in transplant immunology and cell and gene therapy. He serves as a Professor and Vice Chair of The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for Faculty Development and Engagement and Director of HLA and Transplantation Laboratory at Tufts Medical Center and Director of Transplantation & Genomics Core and Cell & Gene Therapy Laboratory at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Askar is the Advisor for the Clinical Services at the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), Advisor for the Egyptian Center of Research and Regenerative Medicine, a Clinical Professor of Medical Education at Texas A&M College of Medicine, Adjunct Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine and a Distinguished Adjunct Professor at Barzan University College in Qatar.

Currently, Dr. Askar is a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Donation and Transplantation, the Chair of the WHO Committee of The Transplantation Society, a Board Member of the Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation, International Advisor to the Royal College of Pathologists and a lifetime Councilor of the International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop.

Dr. Askar has previously served as President of The American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and The American College of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI), Histocompatibility Representative to OPTN Board and member of the OPTN Executive Committee. He has published and lectured extensively on transplant immunology, cell and gene therapy, quality systems, accreditation, and health professions education.
