
Islets and stem cells in diabetes therapy: Current status

Eelco de Koning is a Full Professor of Diabetology at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in the Netherlands. He coordinates the national islet transplantation program in the Netherlands and serves as Director of the type 1 diabetes research center Cure One. He heads the Islet Group at the LUMC focusing on human islet biology, islet transplantation and stem cell islets. He is a principal investigator in different international consortia and Secretary of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association.
Eelco received his medical degree from the University of Utrecht and subsequently conducted doctoral research on islet biology and pathology at the Diabetes Research Laboratories in Oxford, now part of OCDEM. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in endocrinology at the University Medical Center Utrecht, becoming board-certified in endocrinology in 2001. He was also a visiting scientist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and Group Leader at the Hubrecht Institute.
