Dr. (Prof) Ravi Mohanka is a distinguished multi-organ transplant and hepato-biliary surgeon with over 25 years of experience in clinical practice, research, and innovation. He currently serves as the Director of Liver Transplant and Hepato-Biliary Surgery at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai and is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.
A pioneer in his field, Dr. Mohanka has performed over 1,500 liver transplants and 1,000 hepato-biliary surgeries. His career is marked by several clinical firsts, including India’s first successful intestinal transplant and Western India’s first swap and dual-lobe liver transplants. His clinical expertise extends to pediatric transplantation, multi-visceral transplants, and advanced techniques like machine perfusion and normothermic regional perfusion.
Dr. Mohanka is also a prolific researcher with 75 published articles and over 1,500 citations. He holds an MBBS, MS, and DNB in General Surgery, and an MSc in Transplantation. He is a Fellow of the American, International, and Royal (Edinburgh) Colleges of Surgeons. Beyond clinical work, he is a dedicated teacher, having trained more than 65 fellows and residents.
As a technology enthusiast and innovator, he holds three patents and has founded medical startups like BIOS Innovations and an MBA. Dr. Mohanka has also served in prominent leadership roles, including as the President of the Liver Transplant Society of India, Vice President of the Indian Society of Organ Transplant and as a member of the National Liver Review Board for UNOS in the USA. He has been recognized as a "Top Doctor" in Mumbai and Maharashtra multiple times.
