Philip O'Connell (AU)

Professor Philip O’Connell is Executive Director of the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. Prior to taking up this appointment in 2020 he was Director of Transplantation, at Westmead Hospital. After training as a nephrologist in Sydney, he undertook a PhD in transplant immunology at the University of Melbourne and a Post-Doc with Professor Terry Strom at Harvard Medical School. He has broad experience in clinical renal transplantation and transplantation immunology, and specific expertise in clinical islet transplantation, the use of genomics for the development of biomarkers of renal allograft dysfunction and biomarker enrichment for clinical trials. He is a past president of The Transplantation Society and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
