Professor Joo is an active liver transplant and hepatobiliary-pancreatic (HBP) surgeon at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, in Seoul, Korea. In addition to being an expert surgeon, he is an active researcher focused on both basic and translational research. His areas of interest include liver cancer, transplant immunology and oncology, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. Professor Joo was a visiting fellow at the University of Miami, Florida, USA, and a research fellow at Nyberg Lab at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, from 2016 to 2018.
As an active member of his profession, Professor Joo serves on the board of directors for the Korean Society of Transplantation and is a member of several other national and international societies in the fields of HBP surgery and liver transplantation. He has also worked with ISLS and iLDLTG as an academic and organizing committee member. He is the current Secretary General of the Korean Society for Transplantation, the International Coorperation Committee Chair of Korean Liver Transplantation Society and the Netweork Committe Chair of iLDLTG. Professor Joo is deeply involved in liver transplant programs, focusing on ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantations and locally advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Additionally, he conducts extensive research on liver regeneration, bioartificial liver systems, and ex vivo machine perfusion. His work has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and he has been an investigator in several clinical trials.
